Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using Facial Cleansers
Our face is the first thing many people look at when interacting, it is seen as a reflection of oneself, one’s personality, and emotions. This is one of the many reasons why we should keep our faces clean and healthy always.
Using a facial cleanser is one way to maintain a clean face. It is a skincare product intended to remove dirt, oil, makeup, sweat, and other impurities from the face. By using the cleanser, the skin becomes refreshed, clean, glowing, and prepped for the next step in your skincare routine. But just like any other skincare product, it must be used properly to achieve its optimal effectiveness, or else certain mistakes can even cause unintended skin issues. What are these common mistakes to avoid when using facial cleansers?
Using the Wrong Cleanser for Your Skin Type
Identify your skin type so that you won’t fall into these mistakes: using harsh, foaming cleanser into your dry skin that will make it tight and flaky because the wrong cleanser can strip away natural oils; using a cream-based cleanser to your oily skin which is not effective in removing excess oil; or using cleansers with strong fragrances or active ingredients that actually triggers irritation or redness in your sensitive skin. You should look for labels like “hydrating”, “oil control”, or “gentle”
Over-Cleansing
Washing your face too often can actually do more harm than good as it can strip your skin’s natural oil leading to dryness, irritation, or even increased oil production as your skin tries to compensate. Twice a day cleansing, one in the morning and one at night is already enough. Also, limit the use of exfoliating cleansers to 2-3 times a week depending on your skin’s sensitivity. On other days, just use a gentle, non-exfoliating formula.
Not Removing Makeup First
Your heavy foundations, waterproof mascaras, and long-wear lipsticks may not come off completely with just a cleanser, so use a dedicated makeup remover or micellar water to remove all makeup first and prepare your face for a deeper clean.
Using Hot Water
Using hot water to wash your face is not advisable because hot water can strip your skin of essential oils which can cause redness or irritation, instead use lukewarm water.
Applying Cleanser Incorrectly
You won’t be able to get the maximum benefit of the product if you just rub it on your face haphazardly and rinsing it off immediately. The proper way to do it is to wet your face first, then apply the cleanser gently in a circular motion for at least 30 seconds before rinsing. Also, rinse your face thoroughly because the cleanser’s residue on your face can clog pores and eventually result in breakouts or irritation.
Skipping the Post-Cleanse Routine
Cleansing is not enough, you have to follow it up with the right skincare product to protect your skin from environmental stressors. After cleansing, you can apply a toner, then a moisturizer and serum to lock in hydration and for extra nourishment.
Sticking to the Same Cleanser for Too Long
The truth is your skin’s needs can change due to seasons, age, or hormonal fluctuations, so you can change your facial cleanser that will satisfy your needs. You might need a more hydrating product in winter, and an oil-controlling cleanser in summer.
Your skin will thank you for treating it well – using the right product, avoiding mistakes, and practicing proper cleansing methods.
