Banjos have been used for decades in folk, country and bluegrass music, giving those genres the distinctive twang that only the banjo can produce. Unlike guitars, which have a wooden top, the banjo uses a skin on the front of the instrument as its resonator. Coupled with the open tuning and the high-tuned drone string, banjo can be a little tricky to pick up for guitar players, but perserverance will be rewarded with a unique sound, currently in vogue with bands like Mumford and Sons.
